CHAPTER HISTORY

THE BEGINNING

Xi Phi Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s oldest graduate chapter in New York City, was founded on Thursday, November 11, 1926, by a group of graduate and professional men. Such notables as Richard E. Carey, Langston Hughes, Nathaniel Burwell and Judge Dennis Edwards, just to name a few, were dedicated to Omega’s cardinal principles.

The Xi Phi Chapter was chartered in Harlem, New York, on Thursday, November 11, 1926, establishing a legacy of leadership, service, and community engagement.

After about a decade of inactivity during the 1970s, Xi Phi chapter was reactivated in 1982 by Brothers Butler B. Dowery, Wade H. Isreal, John L. Staton, Ray Johnson, Henry D. Biggart and Charles C. Thomas. With the sole intent of reclaiming its mantle as the trusted home for men of Omega Psi Phi throughout New York City and recommitted itself to meaningful community involvement across New York City.

Since our reactivation, the men of Xi Phi have and continue to work diligently to advance, revitalize and support the Harlem community. Lead initiatives include mentoring programs, scholarship awards, clothing drives, voter registration drives, neighborhood clean-ups, feeding the homeless, senior support services, school backpack giveaways, business partnerships, mandated programs and the Omega Black College Tour, which has taken more than 1,500 students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the East Coast. These efforts are supported through Community Uplift through Perseverance (CUP), Inc., 501(c) 3, the chapter’s non-profit fundraising arm.

The chapter maintains Life Membership in the NAACP and is an effective member of the Pan Hellenic Council.

Xi Phi also amplifies its impact through The Omega Express, launched in 1990, and its website, established in 1999, to share its work and connect with the community.

Guided by its chapter motto, “Uplifting the Community Through Our Actions,” Xi Phi Chapter continues to advance educational opportunity, civic engagement, and community empowerment, honoring the enduring mission of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
